Overview

The SRT Red Lines are a planned elevated metro system in Bangkok, Thailand. The lines will be operated by the State Railway of Thailand or SRT. The system consists of two connecting lines, the first one from Bangsue to Rangsit and the second one from Hua Mak to Taling Chan. The second line shares part of its route with the Suvarnabhumi Airport Link. The Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link is currently operational.

Bangkok also has two other transit systems: the Bangkok Skytrain and the Bangkok Metro, along with multiple planned lines for the future. As the Red Lines run largely along the alignment of the failed Hopewell Project, they have also been described as a "Hopewell revival".[1]

In February 2009, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva secured a 24 billion baht (685 million US dollars) loan from the Japanese Government for the 42 mi (67 km) portion from Bangsue to Rangsit.[2][3]

The contract for the construction of the initial Bang Sue-Taling Chan section (15 km) was signed on December 15, 2008, with the contract awarded to the Unique-Chun Wo consortium.[4] Construction started in 2010.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link

The Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (SARL) is a rapid transit line that provides an airport rail link from Suvarnabhumi Airport via Makkasan City Air Terminal to Phaya Thai station in central Bangkok. Most of the line is on a viaduct over the main eastern railway. The SRT Light Red Line's route also goes along the eastern railway routes, parallel to SARL.
